Variations and Additional Works
Variations
Restoration work is unlike purchasing and installing new components for your home, such as a new kitchen or bathroom. We are working with old, historic timbers which bear the ravages of time, whether it be neglect, damage by heavy use or being weather beaten. Organic materials warp and twist over time. Buildings move over their life and a combination of shallow foundations and layers of clay based substrate cause windows to move out of shape over the decades.
Paxton always makes best endeavours to accurately pre-determine the complete schedule for remedial Works, however sometimes unforeseen additional variations with a cost bearing effect can come to light when our craftsmen address the real problems in situ.
This is why we offer Estimates, not Quotations, and why we suggest a 15% contingency with each estimate. We need your collaboration and support as we always wish to make the best possible repair. Often, this means cutting out several generations of poor temporary repairs in order to make a substantial, long lasting one.
We have a process for this called a 'Notice of Variation'. The pure theory is that whenever an issue comes to light which requires an additional process that will have a cost-bearing consequence, a Paxton tradesman or authorised person will discuss the issue and need for remedy in advance, This will require your approval and we will document the process and cost, which you will sgn off to create an approved 'audit trail'.
In practice, people are often out at work or not available; we will use digital photographs and electronic messages by computer and mobile devices to exchange information where possible with the aim of obtaining your consent PRIOR to the works taking place.
Sometimes, customers authorise repairs up to a certain value. The main point is that we are looking to do the right thing, with your consent, so do please help by making daily contact possible.
Additional Works
Sometimes customers ask us to undertake works to additional windows, doors, French Doors and otherwise works which were not on the original schedule.
If the request reasonably lies within our scope of competance we will assess and price the additional works with you and obtain agreement in advance. After this we will be pleased to undertake additional works, or recommend other skilled tradesmen and specialists if the request lies beyond our scope,
