Draught Proofing

Paxton Restoration uses an industry-standard draught proofing technique using brush pile added to the staff beads and parting beads of sash windows.

The white nylon brush pile is inserted into a channel on the rear of the staff bead and parting bead. The look is very discreet. We also add draught proofing to the meeting rail and top rail of the sash window pair to seal every edge.

The brush pile is made of high density polypropylene yarn, siliconised to repel water, and tested to BS7386.  It does not perish, and life should comfortably exceed ten years. It is possible to remove and replace the brush pile for decorating or if it becomes excessively worn, or gets accidentally painted over.

Simple and low-cost draught proofing makes a massive difference. Without draught proofing, a building with sash windows might have 2.5 - 3.0 air changes per hour. By installing draught proofing, air-change rates are significantly reduced to 0.4 per hour, a massive 750% fold improvement before even considering the double-glazing aspect.

Customers are often surprised how effective this low-cost process is and the instant improvements to their previously “cold room”. We often hear customer’s feedback about their reduced energy bills.
